2 Post Lift Safety Advice

by John on March 19, 2010

There are many different types of car garage lifts available, but the type best suited for personal or small business use is a called a 2 post lift. This piece of equipment allows a car or other vehicle to be lifted safely up in the air so you can work on it from underneath. Like the name suggests, the lifting is done by two posts that take all the weight of the vehicle. A 2 post lift can be just as safe as other types of garage lift, but it is not able to support very large or heavy vehicles; this would require a 4 post lift instead. Here are some safety guidelines to follow when using one:

– Check the maximum weight the lift supports.
- If your vehicle is above or even close to the rating marked on the equipment, don’t risk it.
- Take into account any additional items in the vehicle, such as tools in the boot of the car. These should not add that much weight, but it is important that the car is well balanced.
- Always take into account the height of the ceiling when using 2 post lifts, make sure there is enough room for when the lift is fully raised.
- If you have any doubts about what is safe and what is not, call the company that makes the two post vehicle lift. They will be able to advise you about any aspect of the equipment’s use.

Two post lifts can be an incredibly handy bit of kit to have in your garage, but as with any heavy lifting equipment, safety precautions should always be taken. Also make sure you get the 2 post lift serviced regularly by an experienced engineer.
